Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters—the saints and sinners, real or imagined-reading shows you how to be a better human being. -Donalyn Miller

Literacy and Projects

At High Tech Elementary Chula Vista we integrate literacy instruction with our project work. We use read alouds to build background knowledge about the project, to make real world connections, to spark curiosity, and engage students in meaningful conversation.

We personalize our instruction by incorporating text and literature related to the project at each student's just right reading level and we think strategically about a piece of writing to support student learning-in terms of both project-related content and writing strategies that give children the ability to clearly communicate their ideas.

Read Alouds- Novel Engineering

HTeCV

Read alouds can be used in a variety of ways at our school from enhancing projects by building excitement and background knowledge, to practicing problem solving skills and engaging in solution ideation through the application of engineering skills, and sometimes we read aloud to simply share the joy of reading with our students.

Ms. Zoe, our engineering teacher has begun exploring novel engineering with Kindergarten and first grade students through read alouds.
